All surgery involves risks. Although the risks are uncommon,
you need to be aware of them. Dr. Markus will be happy
to answer any questions you may have or address any
of your concerns.
Some
possible complications with breast reduction surgery
include:
Bleeding.
After surgery, you may notice a small amount of
blood on your dressing. This bleeding should gradually
diminish. If the bleeding does not diminish or if you
notice a great deal of blood, please contact Dr. Markus's
office.
Infection.
Infections are a complication that may arise after
any surgery. In breast reduction surgery, the breast
ducts may harbor germs that can cause an infection.
These infections are generally localized and readily
treatable. Dr. Markus may prescribe an antibiotic. A
severe infection may reduce circulation and increase
swelling that may open the incision.
Skin
or nipple loss (necrosis). Diminished circulation
may cause skin or nipple loss. In rare cases the patient
may suffer partial or complete loss of one or both nipples.
Scars.
There is always some scarring with breast reduction
surgery, and most often the scars lighten to an acceptable
color and texture. However, the weight of the breast
can cause the
scars to widen over time. In some rare cases, they can
become thick and painful.
Asymmetry.
In breast reduction surgery, it is virtually impossible
to obtain a perfect match of the shape, volume, and
position of the breasts and areolas. In fact, most women's
breasts are not naturally symmetrical. In some cases,
some minor adjustments may be needed after the healing
process is complete.
Sensation.
Prior to surgery, many large-breasted women experience
decreased sensation in their breasts. In most cases,
Dr. Markus’s surgical technique involves repositioning
the nipple with the blood supply based on lower breast
tissue. This technique offers the greatest chance to
preserve sensation. However, some women experience decreased
sensation or lose sensation after surgery. If a free
nipple graft is needed, sensation and erectile function
will be lost.
Breast
Feeding. Breast reduction surgery can affect the
ability to breast feed. Dr. Markus does not encourage
breast feeding after breast reduction surgery.
