Chicago, IL:
Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can be both physically and emotionally uncomfortable. They can result in severe back, neck, and shoulder pain, poor posture, bra strap indentations, skin irritation, self consciousness, and low self esteem. But just because nature made you that way doesn't mean you have to endure the discomfort.

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue and skin and raises the nipples, making your breasts more proportionate. In the great majority of patients, symptoms are significantly improved. The surgery will not only give you smaller, firmer, more youthful-looking breasts, but a new freedom. You'll be able to exercise more comfortably, participate more readily in sports, and wear a wider variety of clothing styles. Breast reduction surgery ranks among the highest in patient satisfaction.

Breast Reduction Surgery. How Dr. Norman Markus performs your breast reduction will be determined by your anatomy and the results you are looking for.

The most common breast reduction method uses a three-part incision. The first incision is made around the nipple area (areola), and another is made vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the breast's natural curve.

Once Dr. Norman Markus has removed the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, the nipple and areola will be shifted to a higher position. Skin that was once above the nipple will be brought down and together to reshape the breast. Dr. Markus may also use liposuction to improve your breasts' contour especially on the sides of the breasts.

Most often, the areola is too large for your new breast size, so it is likely that Dr. Norman Markus will reduce its size. The nipples and areolas usually remain attached to their underlying tissue, when they are moved to their higher position. This offers the greatest opportunity to preserve sensation, although we can offer no guarantees. However, between 5 and 10% of patients require free nipple areolar grafts. In order to preserve the blood supply to their nipples, for these patients it is safer to detach the nipple and areola and resize and reshape the areola and then reattach them.

What type of incision Dr. Norman Markus uses may vary, depending on the size and shape of your breasts and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. For example, women who want a smaller reduction may be able to avoid the horizontal scar underneath their breasts. For women whose breasts contain a significant amount of fatty tissue, Dr. Norman Markus may be able to use liposuction alone, reducing the breast size with only minimal scarring.

Dr. Norman Markus will discuss with you all your options and recommend the one that is best for your health and the results you desire.
