Many women identify their
femininity with their breasts—your breasts' size and shape can influence
how attractive and desirable you feel. Your
breast size also affects the types of fashions you
can wear comfortably. And if you feel your breasts
are too small, it can have a detrimental affect on
your self-esteem.
Breast augmentation (breast enlargement) is an excellent
option for those women who wish to make their breasts
larger, fuller or more shapely. Breast implants come
in a variety of shapes and sizes that can help you
achieve a new look and allow you the freedom to wear
clothes you never would have tried before. And having
breasts that are closer to your ideal may raise your
self-esteem.
Breast Implant Surgery. In preparation
for breast augmentation, you and Dr. Norman Markus
will discuss many options. He will evaluate the current
size and shape of your breasts, your skin tone, as
well as the location of your nipples and areolas (the
pigmented skin surrounding your nipples), and he will
assist you in making choices that reflect your desired
outcome.
Your desired look will affect what shape implant Dr.
Norman Markus will use. There are two basic
breast implant shapes available, round and shaped.
The round implant enhances the breast size and produces
a more rounded appearance, while the shaped implant
not only increases the breast size but also the breast's
gentle, natural slope.
Breast augmentation can be performed under general
anesthesia or using a local anesthesia combined with
a sedative. The surgical technique Dr. Norman Markus
chooses for your procedure will depend not only on
his experience but your desired results. The incision
is quite small and is made as inconspicuously as possible,
whether underneath the breast in the crease or at the
lower edge of the areola.
Breast implants can be located in one of two locations:
subglandular (directly behind the breast tissue on
top of the muscle) or submuscular (behind the breast
tissue and underneath the muscle of the chest wall).
Breast implant placement depends on several factors
including the thickness of your breast tissue and whether
it can adequately cover the implant, especially at
the top of the breast. Submuscular implants interfere
less with breast examinations and mammography and may
reduce the potential for capsular contracture (scar
tissue that forms around the implant). In patients
with minimal breast and soft tissue coverage at the
upper part of the breast, placing the breast implant
under the muscle will minimize breast implant edge
visibility. However, this placement may result in more
pain for several days after surgery than the subglandular
procedure.
Dr. Norman Markus will then create a “pocket” by lifting
your breast tissue, skin and muscle to properly position
the implant. The empty implant is centered behind the
nipple and then filled with sterile saline. Your incisions
will be closed with stitches and taped for added support.
